Our home stereo system

We have a Maxell Maxsound Soundbar Tabletop Speaker w/ Built-in Subwoofer for our main television.  It provides a lot better sound than our own television speakers and works really well. It integrates into our television so we don’t have to add any new remotes.

Jordon wanted some more volume so we added these Logitech z506 5.1 surround sound speakers for some extra volume.  They are sold at XS Cargo for about $60.  The end result is a really nice sound for about $80 total.

It’s not that powerful of a setup but it works pretty well.  None of us really like loud music and this manages to find that medium between quality and cost.

Deep Fried

ABlack & Decker Deep Fryerfter talking about it for years, we went to XS Cargo and decided to purchase a deep fryer.  I wanted to try a couple of recipes that needed one, including how the Rook & Raven does chicken wings.  I have found a great recipe for their blue cheese dip but I want to do chicken wings the same way they do.

After looking around at a couple, we found this one for $20.  We took it home and fried up some chicken wings, fries, and some Vietnamese Spring Rolls.  It’s been fun so far and while I don’t think it will be used that often, it’s cool to break out for the ideal recipe.  I’ll be posting more deep fried recipes at The Cooking Blog as I try them.

$12.88

29257_lI was in shopping at XS Cargo last week and I noticed these webcams for $12.88.  We have a couple of webcams around the house and of course our Apple products have iSight cameras in them with Facetime as well as Skype but I was amazed at how much the prices fell.

Of course we have little use for webcams as I don’t communicate with my family and Jordon hasn’t talked to his dad in years but whatever barriers are there, cost isn’t one of them.   $13 would bring us into the same room but all of this other stuff keeps us apart.  So in the end, myself and the boys get token Christmas cards each year that just have their name on it and they get tossed in the garbage.  The one year we got a nice Christmas note, they put someone else’s card in our envelope which means that someone probably got a rather cold Christmas greeting.

While most days I am glad that I am free from everything, they still are family and some days I wish we could still be one.  Sadly my father doesn’t want to be around me and my mom wants to be around someone else she thinks is me.  For me, I just want them to accept for me for who I really am but that was a battle that I fought for about 30 years and got nowhere with.  I don’t think a webcam would help my case either.

I guess that is a long winded way of saying that if you need to upgrade your webcam, now is the time to do it.

This weekend

It was a long weekend around here.  The Lighthouse opened a complex needs wing in partnership with the Saskatoon Health Region.  The contractors were still upstairs as the ceremony was being finished.  Jordon and I spent a couple of nights up there painting and doing whatever needed to be done.   The end result is that there will be eight beds in the city for those with significant mental health issues and concurrent disorders.

Jordon was exhausted.  I think he has taken one day away from work since he started at The Lighthouse and really needed to get away.  That idea was shot down by Mark getting incredibly sick this weekend so instead of getting away, Jordon just went to bed.  He slept until noon on Saturday, got up for a bit and went back to bed.

We finally started to function on Sunday when we went to XS Cargo.  I bought Jordon a new iPad keyboard case and we picked up a birthday present for Mark.  Jordon is amazing at picking stuff up for the boys and he got him a fantastic gift that he will love for a really good deal.

Other than Jordon writing a really long blog post about the frustrations he has working within such a broken system, it was pretty uneventful.

Broken

Mark dropped his iPod Touch and was just devastated.  When Jordon came home, he fessed up to it and was just sick when Jordon couldn’t fix it.  As it got tossed, I thought he would cry.   Part of what made it worse was that it was Jordon’s old iPod and he had given it to Mark.  Jordon dropped me off to work and took a very sad and down Mark to practice where they talked about what Mark missed about having an iPod.  Mark told Jordon that he really liked listening to music and chilling out.

Polaroid MP3 PlayerInstead of staying at practice, Jordon headed over to XS Cargo and bought Mark an inexpensive Polaroid MP3 player.  It won’t replace the iPod but it plays music and it made Mark feel a lot better about life and what had happened.   Jordon also told Mark about being heartbroken over accidently breaking things when he was Mark’s age which also took the sting off his day.  Jordon and Lee can’t stop bugging Mark about being on the blue team (blue as in the hated Winnipeg Blue Bombers) so Jordon also picked up some nice new blue headphones.

Mark felt good enough about everything that after he got home from football, he came straight down to work and showed me what Jordon had done for him.   He was thrilled and felt a lot better than he did this afternoon.  Apparently it even has a camera (it was still in the box when Mark showed me).
