38 facts that you didn’t know about Jordon

It’s Jordon’s birthday today as he celebrates his 38th trip around the sun without being tossed off.  In honor of turning 38, here are 38 facts about him that you probably didn’t know.

  1. Jordon is a lifelong Denver Broncos fan.  He started to follow them in Grade 9 during a Monday night where they blew a big lead to the Oakland Raiders.  To this day he hates the Oakland Raiders so much he thinks it calls Brad Wall’s (a huge Raider fan) judgement into question.
  2. Our first dog after we were married was named after John Elway.
  3. Not as big of a fan of that Tebow kid.
  4. Oddly he named Maggi after Margaret Thatcher.
  5. A Conservative, Liberal, and New Democrat all walked into a bar and the bartender said, “How’s it going Jordon?”
  6. He is a tennis fan and one of his beloved possessions is his Prince racket.  It’s the only part of his game that is intimidating however. 
  7. He occasionally has convinced Mark that we were getting rid of Maggi… so we can get a boxing kangaroo.
  8. His first night alone with Mark was during the 2000 World Series.  Sometime during the game Mark threw himself off of Jordon’s knee but Jordon caught him before he hit the ground.  “The catch” is retold with great lore around the house.
  9. His favourite video game of all time is NBA Jam.
  10. He has never been able to pass Super Spike V’ball.  It bothers him to this day.
  11. For some reason he is a Duke fan, despite them breaking his heart in beating UNLV and wrecking their perfect season.  For some reason Christian Laettner became on of his favorite players of all time.
  12. He hates both Kentucky and North Carolina.  He also hates any team from the SEC in any sport, especially football.
  13. Speaking of college sports, he also dislikes THE Ohio State University.  Mostly because of the THE they play before their name.  It really bugs him.
  14. He really does want to be a conservative but he realizes that his conservatism is dead.
  15. Jordon has read every book by Bob Woodward.
  16. He generally tackles a book by historian Robert Caro each summer. 
  17. He drinks only dark roast coffee.  He finds breakfast blends offensive to western culture.
  18. He is a faithful reader of The Atlantic and The Economist.   He loves how all letters to the editor of The Economist start with Sir.
  19. People call him a liberal but that is partly because the conservatives are in power in Saskatchewan and Ottawa.  He can be just as intolerant of NDP and Liberal governments as he can be of Conservative and Saskatchewan Party policies.  He hates stupidity.
  20. He has been strongly influenced theologians Karl Barth and Stanley Hauerwas.
  21. He is pro-life but believes that the church should actually be involved in programs and policies that make it easier for a women to both carry the child to term and raise that child in a setting where they can all get ahead.  He hates pro-life politicians who are against policies that don’t value life once it has been born.
  22. He is fascinated by Paul Krugman’s writings but doesn’t always agree with him and doesn’t always agree with his economic framework.  It scares me a bit that Jordon has an economic framework.
  23. He one time hung up on former Prime Minister Brian Mulroney because he thought he was a crank caller.
  24. He has watched games at the new Comiskey Park, Wrigley Field, the SkyDome, and Angel Stadium of Anaheim.  His goal is to watch a game in each park in the Major Leagues.
  25. Jordon has a standoffish demeanour which means that staff some times think he is displeased with them.  He just tells them when he is displeased with them.
  26. He played Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds to escape from reality when stressed. 
  27. Jordon is a really big Notre Dame fan which is really odd since he is neither Catholic or from the midwestern USA.
  28. Pierre Burton says 1967 was Canada’s last great year but for Jordon, it is 1989 when both Calgary won the Stanley Cup and Saskatchewan won the Grey Cup.
  29. Of all of the books out there, Thomas Homer-Dixon’s book, The Ingenuity Gap was probably the most influential in how he see’s the world.

  31. Outside of Saskatoon, Chicago is Jordon’s favorite city in the world.
  32. Pat Riggin and Pete Peters are two of his favorite hockey players of all time.  I know, that explains a lot.
  33. He has been in two different documentaries.  One even has a IMDB profile and has been screened and viewed internationally.
  34. He hates spaghetti unless it has a non-traditional sauce.
  35. Favourite band since 1986; Bon Jovi.
  36. March 11th is the day his mother slid into a coma before succumbing to brain cancer.  It’s still a bit of a sad day for him.
  37. No more hockey, football, rugby or baseball but he is a decent golfer (who doesn’t enjoy it).
  38. Very few people know more about the economics of sports than Jordon does.  Not sure if that is a marketable skill but if you ever want to win a bar bet over the business of sports, don’t bet against him.
