As you know, it was August Long Weekend and we spent most of it at the cabin. Believe it or not, it was our first trip up there since Easter (we did go up for two hours in June but that was a horrible trip… more of that later).
We were supposed to go up on Friday but I left everything I had to do until the last minute and didn’t accomplish anything. That really bothers Jordon who a) knew it was going to happen and b) had to listen to me justify procrastinating and being lazy. In the end we went up on Saturday morning early and got there in decent time. Jordon decided to go south towards Regina, turn east at Kenaston and take that route for a change of scenery. That was a mistake. The highway (if you can call it that) was so bad it was unsafe to drive on. Only Jordon’s excellent driving and reactions saved us twice. It was harrowing. So much for blaming the bad highways on the NDP.
We got in, unpacked, and started to through things out. We wanted to remove a three quarter bed that Oliver used and put in bunk beds. While we didn’t install the bunkbeds, we did toss the 3/4 bed and that allowed us to set up a corner for a living room which is a big improvement in space usage. I also reorganized the kitchen which is an improvement. Jordon isn’t thrilled with it but we can argue about it the next time we go up. The big improvement was more living space so I’ll call the trip a victory.
In between doing that I went swimming with Mark while Jordon sat on shore with Oliver. Oliver wasn’t that interested in going into the water as much as he was interested in playing in the sand. Later that night we did have a good time with John and Wendy Rigby over coffee. It was hot but eventually cooled down.
Sunday we had Lee and his girlfriend Brittany up until this morning. Oliver has been increasingly worried about the “scary monster” that has been stalking him in his mind. Of course Jordon and Lee could have told him that the scary monster didn’t exist but they chose to make monster noises and freak him out. It backfired on Lee when Oliver had a meltdown while exploring a big three dimensional maze and he thought the monster was outside (it was Lee). After Oliver forgave his uncle, we did have a nice night of making s’mores. I had read of a banana s’more recipe that I modified and tried out. It was a big hit.
The flooding at the lake is incredible despite having receded over the last couple of weeks. Our cabin is far enough away that it isn’t really a concern. The high water levels do make for a small lake and some shorter walks with the bridge to the horse ranch closed. It’s all temporary and with the fertilizer that runs into Last Mountain Lake, who knows, it could be the best thing ever for those trees.
Jordon hasn’t taken any holidays this year so we will be spending some time up there in the fall which means for cooler nights and quiet days. The rest of the photos from the weekend can be found here.
